Resources for prospective chemical engineering students
Thank you for your interest in transferring to the University of Florida’s Chemical Engineering program! As part of a Top 10 Public University and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, UF Chemical Engineering is one of the largest and most dynamic engineering programs in the nation. Our rigorous undergraduate program and research opportunities produce leaders and problem-solvers that take a multidisciplinary approach to innovative and human-centered solutions.
The Department of Chemical Engineering prioritizes admissions for highly qualified transfer applicants who have completed an Associate in Arts (AA) degree at a Florida public community or state college. Students seeking admissions from other schools are considered on a space available basis. Transfer students are admitted in Summer, Fall, and Spring terms.
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Applicants who GREATLY exceed the minimum GPA requirements listed below are most competitive for admission.
- Completion of a minimum of 60 transferable credit hours.
- Completion of AA for students applying from a Florida Public State or Community College.
- Completion of UF’s foreign language requirement (2 sequential years of a foreign language in high school OR a minimum of 8-10 college level credits of the same foreign language).
- A minimum 2.0 overall GPA.
- Grades posted in at least 6* of the 8 common prerequisites (CP) listed below at the time of application with a minimum of 2.5 common prerequisite GPA and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the Analytical Geometry and Calculus sequence. No more than two attempts for each CP course and no more than three double attempts in CP overall are allowed. Withdrawals/drops (excluding medical withdrawals) count as attempts
- * A conditional acceptance may be granted in exceptional cases if a student, at the time of application, has completed only 5 of the common prerequisites courses (CPs) and is concurrently enrolled in additional CPs that will, upon completion, elevate the total number of CPs completed to at least 6. The minimum requirement for conditional acceptance is absence of repeated CPs and a CP GPA surpassing 3.5. The condition for acceptance is that the student must achieve a grade of B or higher in each CP completed during the application semester. If the condition is not met, the student can reapply in the following semester.
- Admitted applicants must complete all 8 common prerequisite courses prior to UF matriculation.
- Students with grades posted in at least 6 of the 8 CPs and current registration in the remaining two courses can apply for the Summer semester and immediately take major coursework (Ex. ECH3023, ECH2934, COP2273), if offered. This provides an opportunity to complete the major in a shorter timeframe.
You are required to complete the following 8 common prerequisite courses prior to UF matriculation:
- MAC2311 Analytical Geometry & Calculus I (4)
- MAC2312 Analytical Geometry & Calculus II (4)
- MAC2313 Analytical Geometry & Calculus III (4)
- MAP2302 Elementary Differential Equations (3)
- CHM2045/L* General Chemistry I (3/1)
- CHM2046/L* General Chemistry II (3/1)
- PHY2048/L* Physics with Calculus I (3/1)
- PHY2049/L* Physics with Calculus II (3/1)
*Chemistry & Physics labs are required but are not included in the common prerequisite GPA for evaluation purposes.
Courses taken at a Florida public college or university (SUS) with the same prefix and last 3 numbers are equivalent at any Florida institution (Ex. CHM1045 is equivalent to CHM2045). A “C” at the end of the course number indicates a combined class and lab (Ex. CHM2045C is equivalent to CHM2045 and CHM2045L).
Courses taken at private, out of state, and international schools: The student is responsible for pursuing course equivalencies. Consult Transferology to see if your courses will transfer to UF. If you have additional questions about course equivalencies, please contact the UF Chemical Engineering advising office at undergraduateadvising@che.ufl.edu.
If you are a state/community college student from a public Florida institution and have completed the 36-hour General Education requirements within your AA degree, you automatically satisfy requirements for non-technical General Education courses at UF.
However, if you are transferring without a State of FL Associate of Arts degree, you must complete all University and State General Education requirements as noted on your UF degree audit; note that previously taken courses may or may not count for UF requirements, at UF’s discretion.
- Application deadlines are posted at UF Transfer Application Dates & Deadlines
- Submit your application through UF Admissions It is your responsibility to make sure that your transcripts arrive by the posted deadline. If you have trouble getting your official transcripts sent, you may upload an unofficial transcript directly to your transfer application. ALL official transcripts with final grades posted must be submitted prior to the start of the term you have applied for to provide accurate academic advising.
- NOTE: All transcripts from each postsecondary institution (including high school) and Credit By Exam scores (Ex. AP, IB, CLEP, Cambridge AICE, etc) must be submitted individually.
- Letters of recommendation are not required.
- The application status can be viewed at https://admissions.ufl.edu/.
Important: You may only apply to one major at a time. Also, It is highly unlikely that you will be able to change your major after being admitted. It is thus critical that you fully commit to one major before you apply.
