Master of Science

The UF Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemical Engineering provides advanced study in chemical engineering fundamentals, specialized areas of the field, and professional skills. Students can tailor their graduate education to their academic and career goals through advanced coursework, research, internships, and other professional experiences.

The M.S. program offers thesis and non-thesis options. All new M.S. students are admitted to the non-thesis option. Students who develop an interest in research may request to move to the thesis option with approval from their research advisor and the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. The thesis option includes a research thesis and final oral examination, while the non-thesis option is completed through advanced coursework and other approved academic or professional experiences.

The M.E. in Chemical Engineering is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, mathematics, environmental science, engineering science, or another related STEM discipline who want to build chemical engineering expertise and prepare for technical careers.

Degree Requirements

M.S. students typically complete the degree requirements within 12 to 24 months.

The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 30 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree, including coursework in:

  • Continuum basis
  • Mathematical basis
  • Advanced Chemical and Biological Processing Laboratory

Students also complete an approved written thesis or report based on research, an internship, or a contemporary chemical engineering topic, depending on their degree option.

Research and Professional Opportunities

M.S. students have opportunities to apply their chemical engineering knowledge through research, internships, and advanced coursework.

Students interested in research can work with faculty on fundamental or applied chemical engineering research. Students may also pursue industrial internships to gain professional experience and connect their academic preparation with real-world engineering applications.

The M.S. can prepare students for careers in industry, research, and other technical fields, as well as further graduate study.

Admissions

How to Apply
Applicants to the M.S. program should have a strong academic background in chemical engineering or a related field. Students without a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering may also be considered and may be required to complete additional undergraduate chemical engineering coursework based on their academic preparation.
